A.K.A My Why

I’m Cassie, the financial coach at Sage Financial Coaching and I’m so glad you’re here! I have a huge secret to tell you: I have the best job in the world! Not that I like seeing people struggle with their finances; far from it and it breaks my heart. I know what it feels like because I’ve been there and I’ve helped others who’ve been there. It’s helping folks find their way out of financial struggles that gives me purpose and I love it! Every single day I get to make a life-changing difference in someone’s life like I’d made in mine. How awesome is that?!?!

My Why…

I came across Dave Ramsey many (many) years ago when my then husband kept throwing the mail away that I’d left sitting around. I didn’t pay enough attention and after missing the electric bill more than once, I knew I had to come up with a system to make sure I’d paid all the bills each month. I bought Dave’s book, The Total Money Makeover and all my problems were solved! Well, not really. I did ‘Daveish’ for several years. And for several years I felt like it worked…pretty much…kinda…ok so sometimes it helped.

Then it all came crumbling down and my life took a big ol’ poopy.

When my twin sons left for college, I took stock of my life. The life I’d made a huge mess out of for my children and me. I had an 18-gallon Rubbermaid tote full of bills and mail I hadn’t opened for almost 2 years.  I had a $10 medical bill for my son’s ingrown toenail that I’d been dragging around like a noose for months. I hadn’t realized I lost my driver’s license for speeding.  I had no clue how much in interest and fees they add on when you totally ignore your student loan.

You see, once life starts falling apart, it keeps falling apart. It started with a horribly nasty divorce from my second husband and went downhill from there: both of my children were hurt in separate accidents, I had an unexpected surgery that laid me up for weeks, the entire ceiling collapsed in my kitchen/great room, I had $500 propane bills every month because of the missing ceiling I didn’t have the money to fix, the water line busted, I got fired from my job of 15 years, I had my car repossessed – twice, I lost my home and farm to foreclosure, my nursing license lapsed, and finally we were just weeks away from being evicted from our rental house. What was worse was it wasn’t just life happening to me, I did all this…I don’t recall making one good financial decision during that time and I made tons of bad ones! The only thing helpful that I remember doing was selling off my possessions to get enough food to feed my children and (barely) keep a roof over our head until my boys left for college. When they left, I wrote a bad check to rent a U-Haul truck, piled what I could in it, and showed up on my mom’s doorstep in the next state. But I wasn’t quite done screwing up yet! With no job yet and no insurance, I rolled my ankle unloading the U-Haul into a storage unit that I had sold my refrigerator to get the money to rent. I just sat down in the dirt and cried. A box fell over onto me and I yelled to the sky, “Stop it! I’m broken! I can’t take anymore!” I looked down and that book I’d bought so many years ago had fallen out of the toppled box and landed in my lap. The Total Money Makeover. I rolled my eyes and did my best imitation of a teenager’s sigh and said “Fine!”

That was on Halloween of 2014. Now, heading into the 3rd year of a global pandemic, I’ve paid off $103,330.27, saved up a fully funded emergency fund, cash flowed a family trip to Japan along with several other shorter and mini-vacations, and our home is on track to be paid off at least 17 years early.

I did it. I found financial peace. And I can help you find it, too. Will you let me help you?
